What Is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, which translates to “science of life” is the oldest system of healing in the world as it dates back to over 5000 years ago!  Ayurveda is a  holistic practice, which means it views the body, mind, and spirit as a whole. This means that the body can’t be completely healthy if the mind and or spirt is not. Ayurveda not only treats a person's physical complaints, but it also teaches lifestyle practices to help maintain or improve health.

Ayurveda explains that everything in existence, including ourselves, is made from the 5 elements: ether, air, fire, water, and earth. Each person is made of different amounts of each of these elements which in Ayurveda we refer to as a persons dosha. There are three doshas: VATA, PITTA, and KAPHA.

Vata is primary made of ether and air,

Pitta is made of fire and a little bit of water,

Kapha is made from earth and water.

Most people have 2 main doshas and in rare cases a person can have even amounts of all elements making them tridoshic. If an imbalance occurs in any of the three doshas, illness results. Ayurveda treats illness in many ways, including dietary changes, herbal remedies, body treatments and also using Ayurveda’s sister science, Yoga. Learning your dosha and acting accordingly can change your life and the way you function in the world.
